Red Nectar Cabernet Sauvignon is our latest red wine discovery from Down Under. Owners of this young Australian winery are Troy Kalleske and Tammy Pfeiffer. Troy makes Red Nectar Barossa Valley Shiraz and Cabernet with grapes from his cousin’s vineyard in Stonewell, in the heart of the Barossa Valley, near Tanunda. The 40-year-old vines have modest yields of just over two tons an acre. The grapes are briefly fermented on the skins, then basket-pressed; the wine spends 12 months in a combination of new and old French oak. James Halliday rated this 2005 vintage Cab 90 points.
Red Nectar Cabernet Sauvignon is a bright crimson in color. The nose is vibrant with black currant, violets, ripe tomato and earth with hints of sandalwood and eucalyptus. The palate is juicy and rich, showing ripe varietal dark berry Cabernet fruit, a touch of licorice and cedary oak. The wine has a silky structure with an extremely lengthy finish.
