Description
McLaren Vale, Australia
Wits End Luna Shiraz is a beautiful red wine gem from Chalk Hill Wines in the renowned McLaren Vale of Australia. Chalk Hill is one of McLaren Vale's premier wineries, owned by the Harvey family whose grape growing heritage dates back six generations in South Australia. There are six family-owned vineyards, first planted in 1897, and these century old vines still bear fruit today. Each vineyard has a different soil type and topography. Vineyards are certified organic. Some biodynamic methods are employed along with IPM (integrated pest management). Wines are labeled under Chalk Hill domestically in Australia, and overseas under both Alpha Crucis and Wits End labels. All wines (whatever the label) are made by Renae Hirsch, who in 2015 succeeded Emma Bekkers.
Wits End Luna Shiraz is 95% Shiraz and 5% Barbera mainly from the certified organic Wits' End vineyard, a site named for the aggravation caused by the heavy black clay, known as Gilgai, Bay of Biscay or Terra Noir, that makes the vineyard virtually inaccessible in winter. Oldest vines planted 1973, with Heritage and SAVI1127 clones mostly on own rootstock. Primary ferment is finished in barrel with malolactic fully in oak. Aging for fourteen months in oak, with an additional two in tank. No fining or filtration. No acidification.
Wits End Luna Shiraz offers a perfumed nose of red berry fruits, floral notes, with a hint of cherry and spice. A vibrant fruit-driven wine, with layers of red fruits, plums, spice and a hint of vanilla. A medium-full bodied wine with lovely balance.
Enjoy Wits End Luna Shiraz with roast loin of lamb, rib-eye steak, BBQ ribs, grilled vegetables and hard cheeses.
