Description

Tuscany, Italy Wine Advocate 95 points! James Suckling 95! Jeb Dunnuck 93! Wine Spectator 94 points! Mastrojanni Brunello di Montalcino is a beautiful red wine gem from the much heralded 2016 Brunello vintage. The Mastrojanni winery is in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, which lies in the southeast of the Montalcino municipality, a region well known for its wines produced from the Sangiovese grape. Gabriele Mastrojanni founded the winery in 1975 when he bought the San Pio and Loreto estates. The combined property now covers 96 hectares, 33 of which are planted with vines in a variety of soils. Seventeen hectares of these vines qualify for Brunello di Montalcino. Considered the king of Tuscan wines and one of the most renowned and long-lived red wines of Italy, Brunello is produced from a specific strain of Sangiovese (Sangiovese Grosso) grown in the unique microclimate surrounding the Tuscan town of Montalcino. "The Mastrojanni 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is dark and velvety in appearance, boasting rich fruit concentration. The bouquet shows dried cherry, blackberry, spice, leather, tar and all the good things you get when Brunello lives a trouble-free childhood in the winery. I recall the 2015 vintage showing enhanced density and richness, and this wine unfolds in a very similar manner. Perhaps the difference between the two vintages is more clearly enunciated in terms of mouthfeel. This 2016 vintage gives the impression of being more linear, tight and structured. Elegant mineral tones define the long and polished finish of this 55,000-bottle release. Drink 2023-2040.”—Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 95 points! Enjoy Mastrojanni Brunello di Montalcino with osso buco, lasagna, eggplant Parmesan, and cheeses.
