Description

Napa Valley, California

Caterwaul Wines is a partnership between Matt Hardin and Thomas Rivers Brown. Matt Hardin, a 6th generation Napa Valley resident, and farmer is owner and managing partner of Matthew Wallace Wines and Hardin-Clark Vineyard Management. Matt enjoys putting his expertise to work farming both ultra-premium grapes for his private clients and several sites that make up the base for the Caterwaul Napa bottling. Thomas Rivers Brown is considered one of the top winemakers in California and crafts some of Napa and Sonoma’s most sought-after wines (Schrader, Post Parade, Outpost and his own Rivers-Marie and Aston Estate).

Typical of Thomas’ winemaking, the Caterwaul wines possess a deep, powerful fruit character while capturing the nuances of site and balancing tannins. The focus is on making vineyard specific Cabernets from Regusci and Cemetery vineyards, as well as an entry level Napa bottling from premium sites throughout the valley. The Napa Valley bottling is consistently heralded by critics as being one of the greatest values in Napa Valley Cabernet.

This vintage of Caterwaul expresses an impressive array of decadent fruit, exotic spice and mouth-watering structure. In the glass, the wine exhibits a completely opaque, deep purple hue with a dark violet halo. Aromas swell from the glass in waves of black cherry, plum reduction, aromatic wood, eucalyptus and pine bough. The palate is marked by a very sleek, polished mouth-feel. Complex notes of roasted meat, cassis, quince, macerated blackberry and nutmeg are intricately layered, framed by a complimentary acidity. This wine offers a wealth of pure Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon character that is readily accessible today and should age well in the cellar for decades. Aged for 20 months in barrel; 100% French oak - 60% new.

Enjoy Caterwaul Cabernet Sauvignon with filet mignon, rack of lamb, steak, grilled vegetables and aged cheeses.
