Tuscany, Italy
Ciacci Piccolomini Toscana Rosso is a terrific-value super-Tuscan from one of the premier producers of Brunello di Montalcino. Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona is one of the most sought-after wineries in all of Italy. This ancient estate has 35 hectares of superior holdings in the prized Castelnuovo dell’Abate zone, including the ‘Pianrosso’ vineyard (meaning ‘red field,’ a reference to the iron rich soils) and the ‘Fonte’ vineyard, which produces grapes for the Rosso di Montalcino. The guidelines of organic agriculture are followed and the full range of wines will be certified organic by 2020.
Ciacci Piccolomini Toscana Rosso is 85% Sangiovese blended with 15% Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. From vineyards 240-360 meters in elevation in soil of medium grain with good levels of marl, dating from the Eocene period. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and aged in cement vats. A fantastic value, the wine displays sweet cherry, red plum, flowers, leather, and a hint of dusty earth. The French varietals add plushness to the palate that nicely rounds out the Sangiovese.
Enjoy Ciacci Piccolomini Toscana Rosso with osso buco, lasagna, eggplant Parmesan, and cheeses.
