Contrada Piedirosso Pompeiano is a beautiful red wine gem from this appellation of Campania around Pompei. Gerardo Contrada is one of nine children and he is the winemaker and manager of this estate. This red comes from 100% Piedirosso grapes grown in the Pompei area. 20-year-old vines are at 600 ft above sea level and the soil is made up of volcanic material which adds complexities to the wine. The wine is aged for 3-9 months in a combination of new to 4th-passage French barriques followed by six months in the bottle.
Contrada Piedirosso Pompeiano is ruby red in color with medium body and bright acidity. An earthy nose with spice and good fruit leads to a silkiness on the palate. Ripe red berry fruit and smoke underline the soft palate. Wonderful for when looking for a softer, lighter Southern Italian red wine.
Contrada Piedirosso Pompeiano is perfect for pizza Napolitana, grilled meats, and pasta with red sauce. Great for spring and summer when something light and refreshing is what's called for. Give it a brief chill on a hot summer night and feel like you are in Naples!
