Cote des Bar, Champagne, France
James Suckling 93 points!
Edouard Duval Champagne Noir d’Eulalie Extra Brut is a sparkling wine gem from the Côte des Bar, where the vineyard soils are made up of clays and limestones, lending to rich, fruity aromas and good minerality. Edouard Duval comes from the famous Duval-Leroy family dynasty, which has been producing champagne for six generations. In 2000, he inherited a domain that his grandfather Charles Roger Duval had acquired in 1950. This was the Domaine de Sainte Eulalie in Bligny, which was founded in the 11th century by the monks of the Cluny Abbey. It is today one of the oldest historical estates still in existence, with 28 hectares of contiguous vineyards producing Champagne, creating a "Monopole". Domaine de Sainte Eulalie owns 28 hectares of contiguous vineyards (Monopole) with 80% Pinot Noir, 19% Chardonnay and 1% Meunier. The vines are on average 30 years old. All the grapes are estate grown using sustainable and organic farming methods and certified "Viticulture durable en Champagne" (VDC).
Edouard Duval Champagne Noir d’Eulalie Extra Brut is a Blanc de Noir of 100% Pinot Noir. The grapes come from 3 plots located at the top of the hillside. It is a rare and unique Champagne, the fruit of fragmented and secular work in which the singular expression of Pinot Noir in mass selection shines on this terroir from marl to oysters. This is a logical addition to the Edouard Duval range, as the estate is situated in the Côte des Bar, where Pinot Noir reigns supreme. It's a blend of grapes from three parcels situated in the highest part of the domaine, and it's 40% aged in Burgundian demi-muids. Super fresh and quite lean in style, with red apple and red berry fruit, and fragrant florality. There's some minerality from the calcareous soils, and a good length.
"Fresh and concentrated with aromas of dried citrus zest, walnut, dried apricot and cocoa. Some lemon and lime, too. It's medium-bodied with bright acidity and a fine, sleek mousse. Saline and biscuit notes to close. Drink now." - James Suckling 93 points!
Enjoy Edouard Duval Champagne Noir d’Eulalie Extra Brut as the perfect aperitif and with any epicurean meal, including desserts. Cheers!
