A Napa Valley original, the origin of Freemark Abbey dates back to 1881, when Josephine and John Tychson purchased 147 acres in the Napa Valley. Eight decades later, Freemark Abbey helped launch the modern era of California wine. Ted Edwards has been Freemark Abbey’s winemaker since 1985. Edwards’ intelligent approach to winemaking, combined with the sheer length of his experience in the Napa Valley-the Rutherford Bench in particular-make him one of the region’s leading vintners.
“The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon (Rutherford) is another impressive wine in this range. Broad, ample and richly textured, the 2017 is fabulous. Dark red cherry, mocha, licorice, chocolate, spice and a bit of new oak all build as this sumptuous, medium to full-bodied wine opens in the glass. There's real presence and character. A dollop of Petit Verdot from Red Barn rounds out the blend. Drinking window: 2023 – 2037.”—Vinous, 94 points!
“The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford was aged for 27 months in French oak barrels, 64% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a little swirling to reveal notes of warm cassis, baked blackberries and garrigue with nuances of dried mulberries, bay leaves and tapenade plus a hint of fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has nice, bright, expressive black berry and savory flavors, supported by grainy tannins, finishing long and refreshing. Drink 2021-2033.”—Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, 92 points!
