Description

Traisental, Austria Huber Gruner Veltliner Obere Steigen is a beautiful white wine gem that shows off this signature white varietal of Austria. The Huber family has been making wine from their land in the Traisental region for five generations, but has owned it since 1778. Wines from Austria named Markus Huber the young winemaker of the year 2002. Stephen Tanzer has called Huber "one of the most promising new talents in the Austrian wine industry." The Huber vineyards are situated along the Traisen River, just 10km south of the Wachau and Kremstal. This wine comes from 25-year-old vines planted on sandy loam soil. This 2008 vintage was rated 90 points by Lisa Perrotti-Brown for Parker's Wine Advocate! Huber Gruner Veltliner Obere Steigen is light yellow in color with hues of green. The wine is peppery on the nose with hints of spices typical of Gruner Veltliner, aromatic herbs and yellow fruits. Crisp and balanced with medium body, it is dense and complex on the palate with flavors of quince, apples, pears and grapefruit. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and spent 3 months on the lees. It is drinking beautifully now and will be good for another 8-10 years. The finish is long and satisfying. Enjoy Huber Gruner Veltliner Obere Steigen as a lovely aperitif wine and with grilled halibut, lobster, roast chicken and turkey.
