With more than 50,000 casks and 6.4 million bottles stored at any one time, La Rioja Alta S.A. is unique in its ability to supply large quantities of fully mature wines of world class quality. The Bodega was formed in 1890 as a partnership of 5 quality-conscious growers keen to exploit the export potential for well-made 'modern' Rioja. La Rioja Alta has never let standards slip and continues to this day the tradition of careful long aging that gives Rioja its unique character. "The 2021 Reserva Viña Alberdi Selección Especial (100% Tempranillo; Rioja Alta & Alavesa) marks only the second Selección Especial since 2001. On the nose, bitter orange, petit four and dried red fruit lead, wrapped in polished oak. Dry, lightly enveloping and structured, the palate brings tobacco and black fruit notes. Only made a few times per decade, the 2021 Vina Alberdi Seleccion Especial is entirely estate-grown Tempranillo from different parts of Rioja named for one of the winery founders. Only American oak from its own cooperage ages the wine, after grapes have been optically sorted for optimal quality (35% of grapes are rejected). Two years in barrel and two in bottle provide a rounded approachability and wide appeal, an excellent quality wine that’s fresh, fruity, dense, and velvety soft, with integrated oak and medium-bodied red-fruit flavors sweetened by vanilla and coconut. This totally overdelivers on its price.
