Matthews Blackboard Red is a beautiful red Bordeaux blend from Washington’s Columbia Valley. Matthews is a family owned and operated winery based in Woodinville, WA. “We take our inspiration from the great wine blending techniques of Bordeaux and from the exceptional fruit that our state is producing. Our wines tip their hat to old world traditions, while embracing the energy and innovation of this ascendant wine region.”
The 2019 Blackboard Red Wine was crafted from several vineyards across two AVAs in Washington State: Royal Slope (51%) and Columbia Valley (49%). Farmed using sustainable practices, the vines were hand-harvested in the early fall mornings of 2019. Upon arrival at the winery, each cluster was hand-sorted and destemmed. The wine was fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, with three months on oak (25% new French oak). After extensive evaluation by our winemaking team, 6,240 cases were produced.
“A value priced blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Blackboard offers lots of ripe black cherry and currant fruits as well as medium-bodied richness, lots of cedary herbs and lead pencil nuances, ripe tannins, and a great finish. If you love classic Bordeaux, give this a whirl. It’s well worth checking out.”-Jeb Dunnuck, 90 points! (on the 2018 vintage)
