The Pope’s New Crib is an English translation of a well-known wine-growing region whose name shall not be mentioned here. What’s the story behind the label from Thiart Wines?

In 1309 the Pope moved the seat of the Roman Catholic church from Rome to Avignon, from where the next 7 Popes ruled before returning to Rome in 1378. Each of these 7 Popes had a specific focus during their rule and you will find reference to each on the label.

Popes: Clement V: Pursues Knights Templar

John XXII: Pursues witchcraft

Benedict XII: Orders the construction of the Palais des Papes

Clement VI: Consecrated the entire Rhone River so that it could be considered holy ground and bodies could be thrown into it during the Black Plague

Innocent VI: Sold paintings to recover some expenses during Pope Clement VI’s reign.

Urban V: Great desire for a crusade against the Turks

Gregory XI: Returned to Rome in part due to incessant pleas and threats from Catherine of Siena.

100% Grenache Noir. Vibrant youthful color, with notes of wild raspberries and red currants. Juicy mid palate with a refreshing and grippy finish. Light to medium-bodied, fruit-forward wine. Can be enjoyed slightly chilled for those hotter than average summer days.
